John Donovan, better known as Johnny Hooker (Recife, August 6, 1987) is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, actor, screenwriter and director. Former lead vocalist of the Candeias Rock City band, he is currently perfoming solo. Hooker participated in the second season of the Geleia do Rock (Rock Jam) reality TV program, presented by musician Beto Lee on the Multishow TV channel. In 2009, the track "Fire!" was included in the soundtrack of the hit show "Os Descolados" (The Funky) on MTV Brazil. His visual/musical style is based on characters from glam rock, pop and tropicalism, with reference to figures such as David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Edy Star, Ney Matogrosso, Cazuza, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Mick Jagger. His shows have a high performative content and subversive discourse, including multiple costume changes, heavy makeup, defenses of drugs and naked women on stage. In 2011, he was nominated as Best New Artist at the Prêmio Multishow de Música Brasileira (Multishow Brazilian Music Award), which was well received by critics. His songs are featured as part of the soundtrack of Hilton Lacerda's gay feature-length film Tatuagem (Tattoo), based on the life of Argentine playwright Tulio Carrella and the Vivencial Theater Company in Recife.
