Saturday, February 7, join author and performer Larry La Fountain for a writing and performance workshop:
Writing Performance/Performing Writing: Voces que hablan.
Cultura in Pilsen, Contratiempo and the Chicago Latino Writers initiative are proud to present an exclusive workshop by queer Latino author, performer and scholar Larry La Fountain-Stokes.
In his two-hour workshop, La Fountain-Stokes guides participants through an exploration of writing for performance and through performance: an experiment in solo performative writing in English, Spanish, Spanglish, and other tongues of the Latina/o experience. We will do theatrical and writing exercises and conceive of our bodies as writing instruments that integrate sound, motion, movement, and dance. We will work within the constraints of our abilities and knowledges and create texts that live and breathe and persist on the page and in the memory of our listeners and viewers, and most importantly that make sense to us and respond to our needs and experiences. Wear comfortable clothes, bring short selections of your work (if you have any) that you are willing to share (or favorite poems or passages by other people), and writing instruments (preferably pen and paper, but electronic is OK).
No previous experience required. The only requirement is an open mind and willingness to experiment. Tickets for workshop ($25) available on Eventbrite

About Larry La Fountain-Stokes:
Larry La Fountain-Stokes is a Puerto Rican writer, performer, and scholar. He has published two books of fiction:
Uñas pintadas de azul/Blue Fingernails (Arizona: Bilingual Press/Editorial Bilingüe, 2009) and
Abolición del pato (San Juan: Terranova Editores, 2013). He is also the author of
Queer Ricans: Cultures and Sexualities in the Diaspora (University of Minnesota Press, 2009), a book of essays about Puerto Rican LGBT culture and migration. He has been performing in drag as Lola von Miramar since 2010 and has appeared in San Juan (Puerto Rico), New York City, Buenos Aires, Montreal, and Tepoztlán (Mexico). He currently works at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he teaches Latina/o studies and Spanish.
