Arguing for its political potential, Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes explores the social and cultural disruptions caused by Latin American and Latinx “locas” (effeminate men, drag queens, transgender performers, and unruly women) and the various forms of violence that queer individuals in Puerto Rico and the U.S. are subjected to. This interdisciplinary, auto-ethnographic, queer-of-color performance studies book explores the lives and work of contemporary performers and activists including Sylvia Rivera, Nina Flowers, Freddie Mercado, Javier Cardona, Jorge Merced, Erika Lopez, Holly Woodlawn, Monica Beverly Hillz, Lady Catiria, and Barbra Herr; television programs such as RuPaul’s Drag Race; films such as Paris Is Burning, The Salt Mines, and Mala Mala; and literary works by authors such as Mayra Santos-Febres and Manuel Ramos Otero. Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes, a drag performer himself, demonstrates how each destabilizes (and sometimes reifies) dominant notions of gender and sexuality through drag and their embodied transgender expression. These performances provide a means to explore and critique issues of race, class, poverty, national identity, and migratory displacement; and at times posit a relationship between audiences and performers that has a ritual-like, communal dimension. La Fountain-Stokes also analyzes the murders of Jorge Steven López Mercado and Kevin Fret in Puerto Rico, and invites readers to challenge, question, and expand their knowledge about queer life, drag, trans performance, and Puerto Rican identity in the Caribbean and the diaspora. He also pays careful attention to transgender experience, highlighting how trans activists and performers mold their bodies, promote social change, and create community in a context that oscillates between glamour and abjection.

For more information and to order, go here.

Forthcoming, University of Michigan Press (2021)

Series: Triangulations: Lesbian/Gay/Queer Theater/Drama/Performance

Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes is Professor of American Culture, Romance Languages and Literatures, and Women's Studies, University of Michigan.

Larry La Fountainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07555199768506869332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-293175844194343608.post-43736272658776333132020-08-20T09:37:00.001-07:002020-08-20T14:22:00.868-07:00Miss Continental Pageant and The Baton Show Lounge Shine in The Queens

I highly recommend Mark Saxenmeyer's new film The Queens (2020), not to be confused with Adrienne Gruben's film of the same name (2019). Saxenmeyer's documentary focuses on the Miss Continental beauty pageant (particularly the 2011 contest) and the history of Chicago’s iconic female illusion show lounge, The Baton (now in its 50th year). Several Puerto Rican performers are featured, including Lady Catiria, Naysha Lopez, and The Queen Bee (formerly known as Queen Bee Ho), who appeared in the documentary Mala Mala. The "bonus features" include a short video on "The NEW Baton Show Lounge" in which Jim Flint (owner of The Baton, creator of the pageant, and drag persona Felicia) explains the evolution in his thought and how the contest now embraces all transgender women, including ones who have undergone gender confirmation surgery.

For an interview with the film director, listen to the Feast of Fun podcast FOF #2888 – The Queens Battle for Miss Continental with Fausto Fernós and Marc Felion.

#translocas #PuertoRico #drag #LGBTQ

quiere a Cuba desesperado y sombrío,

ENGLISH: Escenas transcaribeñas is a compilation of essays, blog entries, newspaper columns, and conference papers on theater, performance, literature, television, and visual arts, published in diverse sources (such as Claridad, El Nuevo Día, 80grados) in Puerto Rico and elsewhere from 1996 to 2017. It includes translations from English to Spanish, with a focus on LGBT topics and issues related to contemporary masculinities in Puerto Rico, Mexico, and among Latinxs in the United States.

The works range from whimsical wood assemblages painted bright yellow (Jurado) and eye-catching popular culture-inspired collages (Vargas) to socially-inspired depictions of Latinx experience (Bernal) and beautiful depictions of animals (Mendoza). There is also a memorial painting in honor of Mary Laredo Herbeck, former curator of the Ellen Kayrod Gallery who passed away in 2010. There is something for everyone in this show.

Join George Vargas and other artists next Friday, March 17 at 1pm for a lecture and panel discussion (free and open to the public). Ellen Kayrod Gallery is a project of the Luella Hannan Memorial Foundation and focuses primarily on artists 60 years of age and older. "El Grito de Mi Raza" showcases many Michigan artists with long careers but also includes young, recent arrivals such as Bernal, who moved from Texas to Detroit 1.5 years ago. The works range in price from $150 to several thousand dollars. Many of the artists in the show have been recognized in peer-reviewed arts publications.
This weekend, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies-Centro at Hunter College sponsored #LGBTRicans: El Encuentro, a historic gathering of LGBT Puerto Ricans in New York City, while the National Puerto Rican Day Parade for the first time ever honored LGBT Puerto Ricans as part of the parade, and we announced a Call for Papers for a special issue of CENTRO Journal on Queer Puerto Rican Sexualities. On Sunday, we proudly marched down 5th Avenue and were warmly received by thousands. Most of us only learned of the massacre in Orlando while we were already at the parade. Orlando, Florida, is the new heart of the Puerto Rican diaspora in the United States; there are almost a million Puerto Ricans in Florida, mostly in Orlando. Most of the victims at Pulse were Puerto Rican. The confluence of such a horrific tragedy in the very midst of our community is devastating. Puerto Rico's queer heart bleeds red.<span class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; display: inline; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px;">

[NEW YORK, NY - June 1st, 2016] For many LGBT Puerto Ricans in the diaspora, carving a space to safely coalesce around their gender and sexuality as Puerto Ricans has proven to be challenging. This summer, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in partnership with the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College has sought out to change this. The first ever LGBT Puerto Rican Diaspora Summit, "LGBT Ricans: El Encuentro, Beyond Marriage Equality", will unite key members of the Puerto Rican Diaspora as a part of the Puerto Rican Day Parade programming on June 11th, 2016, from 11am to 5pm.

“El Encuentro will facilitate LGBT leadership and its supporters for the island and the USA, to come together not just to celebrate recent historic achievements, but also to look toward the future and discuss ways to network and continue to work closely together toward ensuring justice, equality and safety for all.,” said Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez, president of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade. “I am proud of this summit and am certain that it will lead to an ongoing conversation between leaders in Puerto Rico and the U.S. mainland, in which communities on both sides could tremendously benefit.”

“El Encuentro” will serve as a forum, including government officials and Puerto Rican LGBT rights activists from both sides of the Atlantic and will take place at Hunter College’s Silberman School of Social Work. “At Centro, we saw it as necessary to lend our knowledge and space for LGBT Puerto Ricans to come together in the context of the crisis,”said Edwin Melendez, Director of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies. “People are organizing like never before as a reaction to the crisis, and as an organization we want to make sure that we include everyone and serve as a hub for knowledge and potential solutions to be shared across different groups.”

Featured “El Encuentro” speakers include Carmen Yulín Cruz, Mayor of San Juan; Melissa Mark Viverito, New York City Council Speaker, actress and advocate Johanna Rosaly, boxer Orlando "El Fenómeno" Cruz and human rights activist Pedro Julio Serrano. The Summit is co-presented by the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, and organizations Puerto Rico Para Tod@s and LGBT Puerto Rico.

“LGBT Ricans: ‘El Encuentro’ is an effort to continue to build community. We’ve made great strides in the struggle for LGBT equality, but we haven’t achieved it yet. Even after we do achieve full equality, we must get to the issues of justice and liberation,” said Pedro Julio Serrano LGBT rights activist and “El Encuentro” Organizer. “That’s why we’ll come together as LGBT Puerto Ricans with our supporters, to empower, to build, and to move toward a more inclusive and just society for all.”

Serrano, alongside many others will be honored by the National Puerto Rican Day Parade at “El Encuentro”, as this year’s parade is dedicated to the advancement of the LGBT community on the island and the mainland.

During El Encuentro, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade will present special recognition to leaders being honored during Sunday’s Parade. These include:

• Orlando “El Fenómeno” Cruz, olympic athlete and first openly gay boxer;

• Ada Conde e Ivonne Alvarez, LGBT activists who filed a federal lawsuit seeking recognition of their Massachusetts marriage in Puerto Rico;

• Dra. Rosalina “Talin” Ramos, LGBT activist and founder of la Parada de Orgullo LGBTT del Oeste;

• Soraya Santiago, legendary activist and first woman to undergo gender confirmation surgery in Puerto Rico;

• Sylvia Rivera, LGBT activist and leader in the Stonewall’s Riots (Posthumous);

• Antonia Pantoja, founder of ASPIRA (Posthumous);

• Her life partner, Wilhelmina Perry, founder of Faith Leaders of African Descent;

• Barbra Herr, legendary transgender actress;

• Karina Claudio Betancourt, LGBT activist and Director of Open Society Foundations;

• Andy Praschak, founder of the Foundation for Human Rights;

• Holly Woodlawn, transgender actress, model and activist, will be honored with a Posthumous Recognition.

• New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito, pioneer actress Johanna Rosalyand San Juan City Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz will be Parade "Madrinas" (Godmothers) of the LGBT contingent at #PRParade, in recognition of their tireless work on behalf of LGBT rights.

LGBT Ricans: El Encuentro, Beyond Marriage Equality follows a successful summit held last month at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies to address the island’s economic crisis and its implications to stateside Puerto Ricans. El Encuentro is the first of a series of summits that will expand on the diverse panels held part of the series called “Puerto Rico, Puerto Ricans”.
